First Light with Close Encounter - An Interview

***** Interview with Close Encounter *****

Q. When did Close Encounter start? Tell us about the history...
Close Encounter originated in the dead of night, when 4 strangers were united within a dream. Abducted to an astral forest, they fought a demon and returned back to their bodies with a reinvigorated desire to create ethereal pop noise.

Q: Who are your influences?
In terms of musical influences, we’re into the emerging shoegaze scene and all the new up and coming bands featured in sites like yours, and also on DKFM radio, and blogs like FadeAwayRadiate, and others. It’s inspiring to see groups we know like Pale Dian craft a beautiful sound and gain notice for their work. More established bands like Slowdive, TOY, Holydrug Couple, Temples, LSD and the Search for God, and POND are big influences on our sound and textures. But we also take inspiration from older, more new wave sounds like The Cure and Tears for Fears. Our drummer, Cameron, integrates a lot of 90s old school hip-hop flavor, and we’re trying to explore that more. There’s also a funk element with the lead riffs and jazz chords we tend to incorporate, think Steely Dan, or Connan Mockasin and Homeshake for more modern comparisons.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
The Joshua Tree - U2
Rumors - Fleetwood Mac
Disintegration - The Cure
Songs from the Big Chair - Tears for Fears
Loveless - My Bloody Valentine

Q. How do you feel playing live?
You know that feeling you get when you realize you have a new favorite song? It’s a new love, and you play it constantly and constantly until it’s had it’s time and something new comes along. My last pleasure was “Goodbye Horses” by Q Lazzarus. That sustained bliss is what it feels like when we’re performing. (Aside from when the sound guy is an idiot.)

Q. How do you describe Close Encounter sounds?
Close Encounter is chill music for aliens. They use an effectual yet melodic blend of psychedelic, catchy guitar, slow tempo beats, and introspective vocal mood to depict the dawn of a new paranormal age.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
Alien cowboys learned a few jangley riffs and patched it through to the mothership, the mothership sits on it and hacks it a part, testing it on abductees as they lie in comfy beds with headphones on. According to the data generated by those sessions, the songs are refined, and then cryptographic sheets are sent to the band, who decodes it using a cypher. At that point, the final scores are recorded using multi-tracking in a deep underground lair.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
Bad Bad Not Good, She Past Away, METZ, Cranes, POND, Crush, the Bilinda Butchers, Hibou, Black Marble, Banadu, Goldd, Wildhoney, Lilac, Agent bla, Daydream Cathedral, Tender Age, Sobs, we could go on… so much great new music out there.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling - Nancy Sinatra and Lee

Q: What are your plans for the future?
We have been signaling with the mothership to fabricate a new album for world-wide release in 2018. We are also planning a tour of the West Coast and South West United States to coincide with our release, as well as the SXSW events in Austin in the month of March.

Q: Any parting words?
Spread love, don’t be afraid of rejection, take other people’s advice, don’t undervalue what you have to give to the world, invest in Bitcoin and semi-conductor stock, watch out for AI, make art if you don’t already, ground yourself daily, walk in the woods, listen to solfeggio frequencies to meditate every once in a while. Treat yourself to a fine cup of coffee.
